Thailand, CERN to launch first data storage hub in ASEAN

BANGKOK, October 11 (TNA) - A Worldwide LHC Computing Grid (WLCG) centre, the first of its kind in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), will be opened in Thailand in the near future, thanks to an agreement between Thai agencies concerned and the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). Thailand’s National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA), Chulalongkorn University, Suranaree University of Technology and CERN signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on the joint development and operation of the WLCG centre in Thailand in Bangkok on Thursday evening. The centre will serve as the first computing resources centre in the ASEAN bloc for storing and distributing data with other centres across the world. The Thai-CERN ties have been established and strengthened in the wake of four visits to CERN by Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. The revered Thai Princess has proposed the idea for Thailand's collaboration with CERN to increase opportunities for Thai scientists to study from various research projects in order to help further develop knowledge on particles physics in the country. The agreement is also believed to allow Thailand to further upgrade the country’s infrastructure, including water management, climate change scenarios, computer engineering and computer science.
