Thailand extends condolences to SKorea over sunken ferry

BANGKOK, April 18 (TNA) - Thailand, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has sent a letter to South Korea, extending condolences over a tragic sunken ferry earlier this week, killing more than two dozens of people on board, while hundreds others remain missing so far. The Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement posted on its official website on Friday that Caretaker Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul has sent the letter of condolences to South Korean Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se, on behalf of the Thai government and people. The statement expresses Thailand's heartfelt sympathy for last Wednesday's tragedy, in which the 6,325-ton ferry, named Sewol, carrying a confirmed total of 475 passengers on board, mostly high school students, capsized in the high sea off South Korea's southwestern coast on its way from mainland Incheon Port City to the Jeju Island for a four-day school field trip, killing at least 25 people on board, while hundreds others remain missing, based on updated reports. Surapong stated in the letter that the thoughts and prayers of the Thai people are with the victims' families. According to updated international media reports, a total of 25 people, including 12 students, two teachers and three crew members, have been confirmed dead, 179 people rescued and 271 still missing.
