Thailand to hold regional meeting on Rohingya issue

BANGKOK, May 10 (TNA) – Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs plans to organize a special regional conference late this month to discuss solutions to human trafficking. Foreign Ministry Spokesman Sek Wannamethee said the conference was aimed at solving the illegal migration of Rohingya people and the ministry would invite representatives of concerned countries in the region to discuss relevant solutions. Invitations were being sent and Australia already promised to attend the conference. Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop made the promise in her meeting with Thai Foreign Minister Tanasak Patimapragorn during her official visit to Thailand on Friday May 8, he said. Earlier Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said his government would discuss solutions to the migration of Rohingya people with Malaysia and Myanmar. Regarding the possibility of opening up shelters for Rohingya people, he said there were already shelters accommodating about 100,000 people, affected by skirmishes along the border and Rohingya people were also staying there.
