Thailand intensifies patrols along Mekong River

NAKHON PHANOM, THAILAND, February 17 (TNA) - Prompted by the receding Mekong River with rising cross-border smuggling cases, caused by this year's early drought, Thai marine forces have intensified their patrols along the Mekong River, which naturally borders Thailand and Laos. Mekong Riverine Operation Unit (MROU) in Thailand's northeastern Nakhon Phanom Province has increased the number of patrol officers operating along the Mekong River in the Thai side to prevent and crack down smuggling of drugs, Siamese Rosewood, stolen vehicles and other goods, after water levels of the Mekong River have been falling rapidly, making it become easier for smuggling between Thailand and Laos. Besides, the Thai MROU has closely monitored sand pumping and dredging in the middle of the Mekong River to prevent smuggling of the illicit goods into and out of Thailand.(TNA)
