Thailand joins 1st Mekong–Lancang Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

YUNNAN, CHINA, November 12 (TNA) - Thailand participates in the First Mekong–Lancang Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, being held in Jinghong City of China's southern Yunnan Province from November 11-12. Thai Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai arrived in Jinghong on Wednesday evening (local time) to attend the First Mekong–Lancang Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, together with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi and his counterparts from Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam. The six countries along the Mekong River basin are holding their first two-day meeting to find ways to foster their sustainable cooperation. The First Mekong–Lancang Foreign Ministers’ Meeting is being held under the Mekong–Lancang Cooperation (MLC) Framework and the participating countries were set to endorse the MLC Concept Paper, discuss and consider urgent projects and adopt a joint communique on the official launch of the new MLC Framework, which was initiated by China and Thailand and endorsed by the other Mekong leaders at the 17th ASEAN-China Summit last year. Recognised for its high development potential, the new MLC Framework comprehensively covers three areas of cooperation among the member countries, namely political and security sphere, economic and sustainable development and social, cultural and people–to–people exchanges. Meanwhile, Thai Deputy Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs Noppadon Theppitak was also heading a Thai delegation to attend the 1st Mekong–Lancang Senior Officials’ Meeting, during which he met Liu Zhenmin, China's Vice Foreign Minister, to discuss and exchange views in preparation for the Foreign Ministers’ Meeting.
