Thailand joins hands with FAO to reform national food safety policy

BANGKOK, June 30 (TNA) - Thailand, through the Ministries of Public Health and Agriculture and Cooperatives, and the Rome-based United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) have cooperated to reform national food safety policy to become a pilot model for other Asian countries in the future. As part of the agreed cooperation, a conference, themed Steering Committee:Evidence-based food safety, decision making and policy development using multi criteria approaches, with Thailand as a pilot country to lift the food standard in the Asian Region, was held at the Richmond Hotel, in Bangkok's adjacent Nonthaburi Province, on Monday, in which about 40 executives, experts, academics from both the public and private sectors and consumers involving in the food and nutrition sectors participated. During his opening speech, Deputy Permanent Secretary for Public Health Dr. Songyos Chaichana said that the FAO has supported worldwide operations on food security and safety, concerning all those in food chains from production, sale and distribution processes to marketing and consumption. With such focuses, Dr. Songyos acknowledged, the FAO has paid attention to policies on the development of food security and safety in every member country. According to the senior official, the Thai Ministry of Public Health has been funded by the FAO to organise national-level workshops to discuss and work out a balanced food safety policy in the country, taking into account relevant studies in all aspects, including, health, economy, trade and society. The senior official noted that participants of the workshops were set to analyse case evidence related to national food safety, nutrition and food security. The senior official revealed that there will be three workshops from June-August, 2014, after which summarised results will be used as a reform framework for the national food safety policy to be then proposed to and endorsed by the FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy's capital, in order to later be implemented by other Asian nations.
