Thailand, Laos sign two cooperation MoUs

Vientiane, January 24 (TNA) - Thailand and Laos have signed two cooperation memorandum of understandings (MoUs) and also agreed to upgrade four existing temporary border checkpoints to permanent ones, aimed at catering to increasing tourism and trade between the two neighbouring countries, said Sek Wannamethee, director-general of the Thai Foreign Affairs Ministry’s Information Department. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister General Tanasak Patimapragorn signed the MoUs at the end of the 19th Thai-Lao Joint Commission on Bilateral Cooperation (JC) in the Lao capital of Vientiane on Saturday. The MoUs concerns an exchange of academics and know-how between Thailand’s Devawongse Varopakarn Institute of Foreign Affairs and the Lao Foreign Ministry and development of Paksong Hospital in the Lao province of Champasak. The meeting was co-chaired by General Tanasak and his Lao counterpart Thongloun Sisoulith. Sek said both General Tanasak and Lao Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Thongloun hailed the existing warm relations between the two countries and agreed to upgrade the four temporary border checkpoints. He said the two sides also agreed to speed up on signing a new agreement on security along the two countries’ border to boost cooperation on human trafficking suppression. He added that both sides also agreed on organising an informal ministerial meeting, designed for strengthening bilateral relations. (TNA)
