Thailand, Myanmar to further boost border trade

BANGKOK, September 23 (TNA) - Thailand and neighbouring Myanmar have agreed on amending and developing laws and relevant regulations to further boost their border trade. Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul told journalists that Prime Minister and Defence Minister Yingluck Shinawatra discussed the issue with visiting Myanmar Parliament President and House Speaker Thura U Shwe Mann at Bangkok's Government House on Monday morning. Surapong noted that both leaders discussed the possibility of amending laws and regulations on border trade to facilitate their cross-border cargo transport after the ASEAN Community (AC) is formed by 2015, the move of which will also meet Thailand's target on increasing the value of border trade with Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar and Malaysia by 20 per cent annually to exceed one trillion baht per annum, from about 900 billion baht yearly now. According to the Thai deputy prime minister, the Myanmar Parliament President, who is paying an official visit to Thailand from September 22-26, was also gratified for Thailand's good care of Myanmar workers and extension of their registrations for work in the Thai economy for another year. The Myanmar Parliament President confirmed that Myanmar workers are happy with the daily minimum wage of 300 baht in Thailand and he does not expect any shortage of Myanmar labor for Thailand, as the Myanmar population now stand at as many as 80 million, much more than the Thai population. The Myanmar Parliament President also praised Thailand's development, from which Myanmar wants to take lessons. The Thai prime minister then said that a democratic country naturally enjoys good economy and prosperity. (TNA)
