Thailand, Myanmar reach agreements on border demarcation

BANGKOK, September 28 (TNA) - Thailand and neighbor Myanmar have agreed to accelerate on repairing and improving border markers as well as upgrading a temporary checkpoint into a permanent one, said Wasin Thiravetyan, an adviser to the Thai Foreign Affairs Ministry. The agreements were made during a three-day eighth Thailand-Myanmar Joint Boundary Commission (JBC), held at a Bangkok hotel from September 25-28. The meeting was jointly presided over by Wasin and Myanmar Deputy Foreign Minister Thin U Lawin. The previous JBC meeting was held in Myanmar capital of Nay Pyi Taw in November last year. Wasin said the agreements display improving relations between the two countries and their intention to solve border problem ahead of the implementation of ASEAN Community, scheduled at the end of 2015. According to the Foreign Affairs Ministry’s advisor, the two sides agreed to hold regular meetings on preparing a memorandum of understanding for making surveys and border markers which would be ratified by JBC, to take aerial survey of the border to be used in future demarcation, and to upgrade a temporary checkpoint in Prachuap Khiri Khan province to permanent one in response to increasing border trade. Both sides also agreed to construct embankment along the Sai and Ruak rivers in Chiang Saen and Mae Sai districts of Chiang Rai province in order to prevent border problems from occurring in future. Wasin said the next Thailand-Myanmar JBC meeting will be held in Myanmar at the date to be fixed later. (TNA)
