Thailand, Myanmar stress on sound military ties and cooperation

BANGKOK, September 18 (TNA) - Thailand and Myanmar have agreed on maintaining, and even further strengthening, their military ties and cooperation, especially in peacekeeping and security issues along the common border. Visiting Myanmar's Army Commander of Yangon Command Major General Thet Pon and Thailantd's Supreme Commander General Thanchaiyan Srisuwan voiced the agreement during their meeting at the Royal Thai Armed Forces Headquarters on the outskirts of Bangkok on Tuesday. The Thai supreme commander took the opportunity to stress on the Royal Thai Armed Forces' policy on steadily promoting sound relations and cooperation between the Thai and the Myanmar militaries in multi-areas, particularly in their joint moves on peacekeeping and security issues along the common border. The Thai armed forces chief also expressed his appreciation to joint military activities that have been organized between the two neighboring countries so far this year, including the exchange of visits to the other country of Thai and Myanmar military officers and their families' members, as well as the exchange of their military culture, medical services and sports. Meanwhile, the visiting Myanmar's army commander of Yangon command, who is also Chairman of the Thailand-Myanmar High Level Committee (HLC) of the Myanmar side, expressed his thankfulness to the Royal Thai Armed Forces for inviting he, himself, and his entourage to visit Thailand as its official guests and affirmed on sustaining the sound military ties and cooperation between Thailand and Myanmar. On the occasion, the senior Myanmar military delegation also visited a permanent exhibition site opened in honor of late King Bhumibol Adulyadej in the compound of the Royal Thai Armed Forces Headquarters.
