Thailand observes World Oceans Day

BANGKOK, June 7 (TNA) - Thailand observes World Oceans Day, which falls on every June 8, as academics have viewed that an outdated fishery law cannot guarantee the fair exploitation of aquatic animals. One day ahead of the World Oceans Day, concerned parties in Thailand participated in a seminar on Friday, organized by Green Peace Southeast Asia, to discuss the problems of Thai waters and aquatic resources. Statistics show that fisheries in the Thai waters appear to have exceeded limits and caused the declining number of aquatic animals, based on the fact that fishermen made an hourly catch of 300 kilograms five decades ago, but the catch rate has fallen to 25 kilograms an hour presently. Friday's seminar acknowledged that the problems in the Thai sea are obviously serious, as fisheries have reduced marine resources rapidly and some species of fishes have become rarely seen, including silver pomfret, spotted mackerel and tuna. The participants in the seminar viewed that a cause of the critical marine problems is Thailand's outdated fishery law, which dates from 1947 and cannot guarantee the fair exploitation of aquatic animals.
