Thailand to open bidding for tablet computers

BANGKOK, February 8 (TNA) - Thailand’s Education Ministry plans to open a new bidding for the procurement of tablet computers to be handed out to students, after revoking a contract with a Chinese firm. Caretaker Education Minister Chaturon Chaisang (จาตุรนต์ ฉายแสง) told journalists, after a meeting of authorities concerned on Friday, that the concerned authorities agreed to revoke the previous contract, in which the Thai Ministry of Education would buy more than 900,000 tablet computers. According to the caretaker minister, the decision was made after the Chinese firm sent a letter dated January 29, 2014, saying that it wanted to revoke the contract due to political uncertainty in Thailand. Under the contract, the Thai government can forfeit five per cent, equivalent to about 120 million baht, of money deposited as guarantee plus a daily fine for the delay of goods delivery of about 2.2 million baht, started from December 26, 2013 to the date of contract revocation, which is expected on February 10, 2014. The caretaker education minister said a fresh bidding is expected to be held within the next 10 days.(TNA)
