Thailand to Participate in CLMV Meeting in Seoul

BANGKOK, July 27(TNA) - Thailand’s Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs and acting Foreign Minister Sihasak Puangketkeow left Bangkok on Sunday afternoon for Seoul to attend a two-day meeting with ministers of Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam (CLMV) plus South Korea on ways to tightening cooperation in economic development along the Mekong River. The meeting, starting Monday, is considered significant as it would specify economic development framework among those countries and also to help narrow the development gap between new and old members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), said Mr. Sihasak. According to Mr Sihasak, participants at the meeting would approve a draft plan on Mekong River development and would also specify cooperation framework between the member countries for the next three years. The meeting would give an opportunity for Thailand to reaffirm its strategic partnership between ASEAN and South Korea toward developing the Mekong River basin and to also invite the Seoul government to join in development programmes with the rest of ASEAN which include Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Brunei and Singapore, Mr. Sihasak said. South Korean private investors will be invited to invest more in the Mekong River development programmes in which they would be requested to transfer know-how on information and communication technology, and water management as South Korea has experience, he added. The foreign ministry permanent secretary , also acting foreign minister, said that he would hold bilateral talks with South Korean foreign minister Yun Byung-se and businessmen during the visit and would explain to them on the current politics in Thailand. The businessmen will be invited to invest more in the kingdom. He added that he would also inform them that Thailand would proceed all the development projects, including the now delayed water management, in line with the state budget and they also must also be “transparent”.
