Thailand, Philippines agree to enhance bilateral relations

MANILA, April 7 (TNA) - Thailand and the Philippines have agreed to enhance bilateral relations within their longstanding cooperation framework. The agreement was reached in Manila, the Philippines' capital, on Tuesday morning (local time), during bilateral talks between Philippine Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert F. del Rosario and Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister General Tanasak Patimapragorn, who is paying a two-day official visit to the neighboring country in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), scheduled for April 6-7. On the occasion, General Tanasak invited the Philippine foreign affairs secretary to visit Thailand to attend the 6th meeting of the Thai-Philippine Joint Commission for Bilateral Cooperation in the second half of this year. The Philippine foreign affairs secretary, on the other hand, informed the Thai deputy prime minister and foreign minister of the Philippines' readiness to host the first meetings of the Philippine-Thai Joint Trade Committee and the Joint Committee on Military Cooperation from July 13-17, 2015. Regarding investment cooperation, the Philippine minister expressed his appreciation to steady investment by Thai business operators in the Philippines. The visiting Thai deputy prime minister, in turn, asked the Philippines to take care of Thai investors and invited Philippine investors to do their businesses in Thailand, while promising that Thailand is ready to team up with the Philippines for mutual tourism promotion. Besides, both sides agreed to speed up a teachers' exchange program and Thailand expressed its readiness to hold the first Thai-Philippine academic meeting to discuss cooperation on food and agricultural security. The Thai deputy premier also took the opportunity to express gratitude for the Philippines' support for Thailand's roles as the coordinator between ASEAN and China, saying that Thailand will carry on the roles over the the next four months.
