Thailand to reduce GHG emissions by 6-20% within 2020

BANGKOK, June 8 (TNA) - Thailand supports environmentally-friendly products to meet market demand and plans to cut carbon dioxide emissions by 6-20 per cent within 2020. Thai Deputy Prime Minister Air Chief Marshal Prajin Juntong announced the policies while opening the Eco-Products International Fair 2016 (EPIF 2016) at the Bangkok International Trade and Exhibition Center on Wednesday. Air Chief Marshal Prajin stressed that Thailand has emphasized "green production" for the sake of economic and social sustainability. Besides, the Thai government has applied the Sufficiency Economy Philosophy, introduced by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG)emissions and planned to cut carbon dioxide emissions alone by 6-20% within 2020. ACM Prajin said that the Thai government is also supporting electric vehicles, alternative energy, railway transport and public participation in environmental conservation. “Consumers increasingly demand environmentally- friendly products and services. Many countries have introduced non-tariff trade measures which focus on labor, transport, waste, global problems and sustainable development. This is an important issue that business operators must be aware of and they must develop environmentally friendly production in response to the changing demand,” suggested the deputy prime minister. Meanwhile, Mari Amano, Secretary-General of the Asian Productivity Organization, told the seminar that his organization has supported the concept of green productivity for more than two decades and EPIF 2016, set to be held during June 8-11, is an important forum to promote the concept.
