Thailand remains on alert against deadly diseases

BANGKOK, February 13 (TNA) - Thailand has continued monitoring deadly communicable diseases harming both humans and animals, with preventive measures having been in good place. Deputy Prime Minister Yongyuth Yuthavong told journalists of the firm stance, after Thursday's meeting of the National Directing Committee for Ensuring Promptness in the Prevention and Solution of Emerging Diseases in Bangkok. Yongyuth stressed although the overall situation of the Ebola disease has improved in West Africa, Thailand, through the Ministry of Public Health and other concerned agencies, have remained on alert against all deadly diseases. Yongyuth said the National Directing Committee for Ensuring Promptness in the Prevention and Solution of Emerging Diseases has agreed that several countries, including Thailand, have closely monitored and imposed strict preventive measures against any outbreak of Ebola virus in their countries over the past months and, fortunately, not a single Ebola victim has been found in Thailand so far. According to the Thai deputy prime minister, 9,177 Ebola victims have died in Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia in West Africa, out of a total of 22,894 people suffering from the disease. The Thai deputy premier insisted even though the situation has improved in those countries, the committee resolved that preventive measures for Ebola, as well as other deadly diseases, including bird flu and a new strain of influenza and the Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV), should be carried on due to the severity of those diseases. Meanwhile, Thai Public Health Minister Dr. Rajata Rajatanavin stated that, in response to a growing trend of transmissions of deadly diseases from animals to humans, concerned agencies have focused on monitoring such the diseases.
