Thailand responds to AI report

BANGKOK, May 25 (TNA) - In response to the UK-based Amnesty International or AI's recent report on human rights issues in Thailand, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs insisted on Friday on the country's active human rights protection. Thai Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs Sihasak Puangketkaew acknowledged that the Thai government is addressing the issues in a constructive manner. The 2012 AI report on human rights situations in Thailand, released on May 24, indicates that the freedom of expression in Thailand has been restricted because of Section 112 of the Criminal Code or the lese majeste law. AI urged the Thai government to amend the lese majeste law to comply with international laws and standards and replace death penalty with life imprisonment. (TNA)
