Thailand works together with ASEAN on security issues

BANGKOK, April 17 (TNA) - The Thai government has paid attention to security issues and worked together with other member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), through the Ministry of Defence. Thai Deputy Prime Minister General Prawit Wongsuwan, who oversees national security and who is also Defence Minister, spoke of the policy at Bangkok's Government House on Friday while reporting the interim government's performances in its first six months in office in areas under his supervision. General Prawit said that his Defence Ministry has cooperated closely with defence ministries of other ASEAN neighbours through existing mechanisms. On security along the border, the deputy premier stated that the Royal Thai Armed Forces and the police have jointly taken care of cross-border problems, namely illegal entry of migrants, as well as drug and goods smuggling. The deputy prime minister reported that the Thai military has also tried to maintain peace in the country and protected public property and people's lives, while supporting national reconciliation. According to the deputy prime minister, peace can be seen in the country, especially during recent Songkran or Traditional Thai New Year celebrations nationwide, because people have agreed with the army-led National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) on creating national unity. Touching on the situation in the violence-plagued Thai deep South, the deputy prime minister noted that the government has received cooperation from every sector in resolving unrest in the region, along with trying to organise peace negotiations with insurgent representatives. Besides, the interim government has sent reports on anti-human trafficking in Thailand to the US government twice and expected to receive a positive response from Washington. The deputy prime minister also revealed that more than 25,000 websites have been closed by the interim government on charges of insulting Thailand's royal institution. (TNA)
