Thailand's 20 suspects confirmed to be free from MERS-CoV

BANGKOK, June 29 (TNA) - Twenty people, out of a total of 36, suspected to have probably contracted the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV), have completed a 14-day standard quarantine in Thailand and have been confirmed to be free from the deadly virus, while the country's first MERS-CoV patient, a 75-year-old Omani visitor, has been steadily recovering. Thai health authorities, including Public Health Minister Professor Doctor Rajata Rajatanavin, Acting Permanent Secretary for Public Health Doctor Surachet Satitniramai and Bamrasnaradura Infectious Diseases Institute Director Doctor Jariya Saengsajja, told a joint press conference of the updates on Monday. The public health minister said the Omani patient, who has been treated at an isolated ward of the state-run Bamrasnaradura Infectious Diseases Institute, where all suspects of the fatal virus must also be quarantined, has been steadily recovering. According to the public health minister, the Omani man needs to undergo more sputum tests to assure that he no longer has the communicable virus and, if so, he will be then transferred from the isolated ward to a normal ward soon. The minister assessed that the 75-year-old Omani patient should be discharged from the Bamrasnaradura Infectious Diseases Institute by next month, acknowledging that the conditions of his three relatives, who will complete their 14-day quarantine by July 2, 2015, have been normal so far and should be released by scheduled.
