Thailand's Anti-Corruption Organization opposes amnesty bill

BANGKOK, November 1 (TNA) - The Anti-Corruption Organization of Thailand has filed a statement to oppose the government-sponsored amnesty bill with the US Embassy in Bangkok. Khunying Chada Wattanasiritham, Vice Chairperson of the Anti-Corruption Organization of Thailand, told journalists of the move, joined by members of business, financial and investment organizations, after the amnesty bill was approved by the House of Representatives on early Friday morning with the majority vote of 310:0. Khunying Chada said that the controversial bill is considered to have great adverse economic and social impacts on Thai people, and that the Thai government appears to violate the United Nations Convention against Corruption, which has taken effect since December 14, 2005 and ratified by the Thai government since March 1, 2011. Khunying Chada explained that her organization opposes only to an element of the amnesty bill concerning corruption, as it further supports corruption and absolution for corrupt people, undermines the fights of all sectors in Thailand against corruption and affects the country's transparency image in the eyes of the international community. Khunying Chada cautioned that the amnesty bill would also affect the confidence of the world community in Thailand and, thus, foreign investment in the Thai economy, while shaking the national economic and social stability.
