Thailand's anti-government leader to be charged with treason

BANGKOK, April 8 (TNA) - The ruling Pheu Thai Party has filed a complaint with the Department of Special Investigation (DSI), asking the independent investigative agency to charge anti-government protest leader Suthep Thaugsuban with treason. Pheu Thai Party Spokesman Prompong Nopparit submitted the complaint with DSI Director-General Tarit Pengdith on Tuesday morning, reasoning that Suthep recently announced to seek sovereign status, which should justify prosecution against him for treason. The Pheu Thai Party spokesman also presented the transcription and video recording Suthep’s recent speech on the matter to the DSI chief. The spokesman said he will also file the same complaint with the Constitutional Court within this week. The DSI chief acknowledged that the DSI, the Royal Thai Police Office and the Office of the Attorney General have monitored movements of the anti-government People’s Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC), led by Suthep, and what Suthep announced was the resolution of a group of PDRC leaders, the offence is, therefore, considered concerning not only Suthep, but also other protest leaders.
