Thailand's caretaker government, Senate to meet on national solutions May 19

BANGKOK, May 17 (TNA) - Acting caretaker prime minister Niwattumrong Boonsongpaisan says that his caretaker government is ready to meet with the Thai Senate to discuss solutions to the persistent domestic political stalemate next Monday. Niwattumrong told reporters in Chiang Mai Province in the Thai North on Saturday that the caretaker government has accepted an invitation of the Senate for an informal meeting on May 19 and he will lead his caretaker Cabinet to the talks. Niwattumrong insisted, however, that a nomination of “neutral interim prime minister” under the virtue of Article 7 of the Thai Constitution cannot be used at this time and, announcing that his caretaker government will only accept a solution which is under legal and constitutional framework. The acting caretaker premier also said that the caretaker government still wants to meet with the Election Commission of Thailand (EC) to finalize a date for the fresh general election. Previous talks between the caretaker government and the EC on May 15 was called off due to a raid into the venue of the talks, the Royal Thai Air Force headquarters in Bangkok's Don Muang area, by protesters of the anti-government People’s Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC). Regarding Army Chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha’s stern warning against violent groups recently, Niwattumrong opined that the army chief was just concerned over the situation but he does not have any intention to declare martial law. Niwattumrong said he has no problem working as an acting caretaker prime minister, as it is his legal duty. (TNA)
