Thailand's Caretaker PM stresses on alternative energy

CHIANG MAI, THAILAND, March 14 (TNA) - Caretaker Prime Minister and Defence Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has stressed on the importance of alternative energy, including wind, solar and energy plants, namely palm, napier grass and pine. Yingluck ordered the Defence Energy Department to help develop alternative energy sources while visiting the Northern Petroleum Development Centre (NPDC), Bo Ton Kham and Bo Pongsaikham in Chiang Mai Province in the Thai North, her hometown, on Friday. Yingluck suggested that concerned agencies cooperate with the public in implementing alternative energy development plans, especially those used for agricultural zoning aimed to, among others, help reduce bush fires and haze. On Thursday, the caretaker prime minister instructed all concerned agencies, while visiting Khon Kaen Province in the Thai Northeast, to ensure sufficient water supply for public consumption in the current dry season, particularly in drought-hit areas, through efficient water management measures. The caretaker prime minister then gave a policy on agricultural zoning in the Northeast, recommending that local farmers plant sugar cane and cassava on highlands in the dry season, instead of rice, to earn steady income. Besides, the caretaker prime minister has ordered the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) to work closely with each province in surveying areas near water sources suitable for local crop plantations as a long-term solution to water shortages.(TNA)
