Thailand's inmates to become fishing boat crewmen

BANGKOK, November 27 (TNA) - Thai authorities plan to field inmates, aged 18-25, who nearly serve their terms in paid jobs aboard fishing boats, initially in Bangkok's neighboring Samut Sakhon Province, where they will be recruited voluntarily. Sumet Mahosot, Director-General of the Ministry of Labor's Department of Employment, told journalists on Thursday that he and Withaya Suriyawong, Director-General of the Ministry of Justice's Department of Corrections, have agreed that inmates who nearly serve their terms should become fishing crewmen on a voluntary basis. Sumet said he and Withaya have also agreed that the inmates should be well-informed of working conditions aboard fishing boats beforehand and should be protected and paid to prevent forced labour. Sumet revealed that provincial employment and corrections officials in Samut Sakhon, where the pilot project will be launched, will discuss the project implementation next week, acknowledging that the number of inmates participating in the project depends on their own decision.
