Thailand's new general election expected in July 2014

BANGKOK, April 16 (TNA) - An election commissioner, Somchai Srisuthiyakorn says he expects that Thailand's next general election should take place on July 20 or 27, 2014, and the House of Representatives should open in September, one month before the new Thai government would take office. Somchai told journalists on Wednesday that his expected timeframe had nothing to do with corruption cases against the caretaker government the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) and the Constitutional Court are handling. The Election Commission of Thailand (EC) and the caretaker government are scheduled to meet on April 29-30 to discuss the schedule for the issuance of a new Royal Decree on the next general election. Somchai acknowledged that the caretaker government wants the next national poll to happen as soon as possible, within 90 days after the new Royal Decree is approved by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej; so, the next general election should fall on either July 20 or 27, 2014. Somchai said that the EC will prevent the nullification of the next general election by registering MP candidates through many channels so that there will be candidates in all constituencies. Meanwhile, Norarat Pimsen, Secretary-General to the Thai Senate, told reporters that the next Senate session cannot open on April 18 and she wondered whether it would be on April 24, but she will discuss the opening schedule with the Cabinet Secretariat.
