Thailand's NHRC calls for all sides to observe Constitution, human rights

BANGKOK, November 28 (TNA) - Thailand’s National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has urged both demonstrators and the government to act constitutionally to ensure national peace and order and to uphold human rights. The NHRC declared on Thursday that it has closely monitored the domestic political situation with concerns over escalating rallies against the government this week, with protesters' occupation of many government offices, and the administration's extension of the enforcement of the Internal Security Act (ISA) to cover all areas in Bangkok and targeted areas in peripheral provinces. The NHRC, thus, aired its worries over feared violence and human rights violations subsequently, as occurred in the past, and called for demonstrators to show their anti-government protests peacefully and to avoid the violation of human rights and the Constitution in all forms. The NHRC also asked the government to prevent any violent incident and observe international laws and norms in dealing with the protesters, namely not to use force but inducing negotiations. The NHRC also called on both protesters and the government not to intervene with the media, while journalists remaining neutral and not taking sides in their coverage. (TNA)
