Thailand's NLA active in fighting human trafficking

BANGKOK, August 4 (TNA) - Thailand’s National Legislative Assembly (NLA) says it will continue actively supporting the government's fight against human trafficking-related issues, especially in revising relevant laws. While stressing on the stance in response to the US government's recent decision on keeping Thailand in the lowest Tier 3 status in its Trafficking in Persons (TIP) report 2015, NLA President Pornpetch Wichitchonchai told journalists that among others, NLA has amended the Thai Human Trafficking Suppression and Prevention Act to help prevent migrant workers from becoming victims of human traffickers. Pornpetch noted that the Thai government is also considering to propose 4-5 new relevant draft bills or executive decrees to NLA's deliberation and passages. The NLA president assessed if the new 4-5 bills were promulgated over the next 90 days, they should support Thailand for being removed from the Tier 3 status in Washington's future TIP reports. The NLA president revealed that NLA is also deliberating a draft bill against sexual offences to comprehensively protect children and youths from sexual abuse. Besides, the NLA president proposed that the government has relevant Thai laws translated into various foreign languages so that the international community properly understands Thailand's efforts to solve human trafficking-related problems.
