Thailand's roadshows attract Bt100b foreign investment

BANGKOK, June 17 (TNA) - One-on-one meetings of business operators which were parts of Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra’s overseas trips from 2012 to April 2013 had attracted 22 foreign investment projects, totally worth about 100 billion baht, to Thailand. Industry Minister Prasert Boonchaisuk told reporters of the development on Monday, acknowledging that the new foreign investment projects were in many Thai industries, including automobile and parts, plate, electronic and renewable energy sectors. Prasert noted that several business operators were seeking promotional privileges from his ministry's Board of Investment of Thailand (BOI) for their investment projects. According to the minister, business operators sought the BOI's promotional privileges for their investment projects, worth 1.47 trillion baht, last year, a historically high amount. The industry minister revealed that he has ordered the BOI to continue inviting foreign investors to Thailand, with targeted investors including those from Japan, China, South Korea and Taiwan, and also ordered the BOI to support Thai investment projects in neighbouring Laos, Myanmar, Cambodia, Indonesia and India. Meanwhile, BOI Secretary-General Udom Wongviwatchai said that the BOI has organized 60-70 roadshows annually, targeting investors in chemical and automobile industries, and will organize more roadshows in Turkey, Mozambique and Uganda in the near future. Besides, the BOI plans to open a new overseas office in Mumbai, India, late this month. (TNA)
