Thais safe after quake struck Nepal

BANGKOK, April 26 (TNA) - About 100 Thai nationals in Nepal, many working at electricity plants and hotels, are reported safe following a massive 7.8-magnitude earthquake on Saturday while the number of casualties has reached at least 1,900 people. Thai Foreign Ministry Spokesman Sek Wannamethee said Nepal’s most powerful quake in decades caused a large number of casualties and damaged the walls of a United Nations office and the Thai embassy in the capital. Sek said a small number of Thais suffered minor injuries from the tragic incident. More than 26,000 Buddhist Thais travel to Nepal annually to offer prayers to Lord Buddha. Thai Airways International, meanwhile, announced that it would fly from Bangkok to Kathmandu and returning to the Thai capital on Sunday after the airport there resumed operations. (TNA)
