Thais satisfied with NCPOs’ performance: Poll

BANGKOK, June 22 (TNA) – A majority of Thai people were satisfied with the performance of the ruling National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) in administering the country, after it had seized power from the previous government a month ago, according to Suan Dusit Poll. The poll conducted by Bangkok-based Suan Dusit Rajabat University on 1,614 people nationwide between June 1 – 21, showed that the NCPO received 8.82 out of 10 points for its one-month performance in the overall national administration following the May 22 coup. 72.79 per cent of the total respondents said general atmosphere in the country had improved while 69.6 per cent said the junta was able to solve several significant problems such as settling debts to farmers joining the rice-pledging programme, sponsored by the previous government. Asked about the most outstanding NCPO’s work, 49.02 per cent of the respondents named the NCPO’s appropriate and decisive exercise of power while 32.35 percent pointed to the military council’s reconciliation activities. On what they want the NCPO to do on national administration, 34.02 per cent of the respondents wanted the military council to urgently solve economic, corruption and social divisiveness problems and 21.9 per cent wanted it to accelerate on national reform in order to create confidence to foreigners. On their satisfaction with the NPCO, 50.48 per cent said they were highly satisfied with the military council role for it to help bring back happiness to the society and 39.57 percent said they were generally satisfied as they felt more secure while their living returned to normal. However, 37.98 per cent of the respondents said some groups of people still opposed the junta as they believed their rights had been limited, and they believed this would be a major hindrance in the NPCO’s national administration.
