Thais warned to stay away from areas at risk in Philippines

BANGKOK, June 15 (TNA) - The Thai Embassy in Manila has warned Thai nationals to be extra careful and refrain from traveling to areas at risk in the Philippines, especially those in the country's southern region. Foreign Ministry Spokesman Sek Wannamethee told journalists on Wednesday that the Thai Embassy to the Philippines has posted the warning on its website in response to a brutal murder of a Canadian man, identified as Robert Hall, by Abu Sayyaf Islamist militants in the South of the country earlier this week. The spokesman quoted the warning statement of the Thai Embassy in Manila as saying that Thai citizens living in the Philippines or planning to visit the South of the country, particularly areas in the central and the western sides of the Mindanao Island, as well as popular tourist destinations, like the Palawan Island, which are possibly targeted for ransom abductions by the Abu Sayyaf Islamist militants, should beware of the risk and avoid visiting to the areas, if not really necessary. Besides, Thai nationals and visitors should closely follow up the updated situation in the areas at risks in the Philippines for the sake of their own safety. (TNA)
