Three Documents To Be Adopted At 26th ASEAN Summit - Foreign Minister

KUALA LUMPUR, April 25 (Bernama) -- The Kuala Lumpur Declaration on People-Oriented and People-Centered ASEAN is among three documents set for adoption by ASEAN leaders at the 26th ASEAN Summit on April 26-27 in Kuala Lumpur and Langkawi. The others are the Langkawi Declaration on the Global Movement of Moderates and ASEAN Declaration On Institutionalising the Resilience of ASEAN and Its Communities and People to Disasters and Climate Change. Malaysia's Foreign Minister Anifah Aman said the Kuala Lumpur Declaration on People-Oriented and People-Centered ASEAN is intended to be an aspirational declaration and set the framework for adoption of the ASEAN Community’s Post-2015 integral document. "The focus of the declaration is on people and the environment for sustainable development in the region," he told a news conference ahead of the summit here Friday. He said it was in line with the United Nation (UN) Post-2015 Agenda objectives and aspirations which "places people and earth/planet as the centre" for sustainable development. Anifah said the Langkawi declaration was intended to strengthen ASEAN unity and solidarity and its central role in maintaining and promoting peace, stability, harmony and prosperity in the region. He added that the ASEAN declaration underscored the importance of building an ASEAN Community that was resilient to disaster and climate change, viewing resilience as a unifying multifaceted process and outcome. This is in view of recognising the importance in enhancing ASEAN cooperation in Disaster Management and Emergency Response, taking into consideration that disasters related to natural hazards, have rapidly increased causing deaths, great damage, destruction and human sufferings in the region, he said. Anifah also said during the plenary session, the leaders would discuss the establishment of an ASEAN Community, progress on the ASEAN Community's Post-2015 Vision and external relations and future direction. "During the retreat, the leaders will discuss topics on ASEAN Centrality, the impact of the financial crisis and economic slowdown on the region and ASEAN's response, climate change and disaster management as well as exchange views on regional and international issues of common concern," he added. The ASEAN Summit will be preceded by several ASEAN Ministerial Meetings on Sunday (April 26). Anifah said ASEAN leaders are also scheduled to have separate meetings with representatives from the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA), Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), ASEAN Youth and the ASEAN Business Advisory Council (ABAC). During the 26th ASEAN Summit, there will also be a number of side events, namely, a Forum for Spouses of ASEAN Heads of State/Government and the 12th ASEAN Leadership Forum organised by the Asian Strategy and Leadership Institute (ASLI) and launch of Commemorative Coins on Malaysia’s Chairmanship of ASEAN 2015. --BERNAMA
