Top envoy:US-Thailand military cooperation remains strong

BANGKOK, November 24 (TNA) - New US Ambassador in Bangkok Glyn Davies says that military cooperation between the United States and Thailand remains strong, reiterating that the next annual Cobra Gold joint military exercise will take place in February 2016. Speaking to journalists after meeting with Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister General Prawit Wongsuwan at the Thai Ministry of Defence on Monday, Davies stressed on the longstanding US-Thailand military relations, expressing his hope that the relations over the past 60 years would continue. The US top envoy said that the annual Cobra Gold joint military exercise is significant because several other countries in the region also participate. The US ambassador revealed that he held talks on several issues with the Thai deputy prime minister and defence minister, including joint cooperation in fighting against terrorism, an ongoing territorial dispute in the South China Sea, human trafficking and the recent deportation of two Chinese nationals to their home country. The US top envoy, however, expressed disappointment that the Thai government has deported the two Chinese people to their home country, as the duo earlier registered themselves as refugees. But Beijing's mission to the United Nations in Geneva insisted that the Chinese pair were not refugees, alleging them of criminal suspects for organising other persons to secretly cross the national border, illegally staying in Thailand and decerving the repatriation according to laws.
