Train derails in Lower Thai North, no casualties

UTTARADIT, August 3 (TNA) - Train services to northern Thailand have been partially disrupted, after a train travelling between Bangkok and Chiang Mai Province in the Thai North derailed in Uttaradit Province before dawn on Saturday (Aug 2), but no casualties were reported. The State Railway of Thailand or SRT reported that the accident took place at about 4:30am, after the last six bogies of the passenger train derailed inside a tunnel due to broken sleepers. Fortunately, no damages were reported on the first five bogies which happened to be outside the tunnel and could proceed with the journey to Den Chai station in Phrae Province. SRT said the passengers, 90 per cent are foreigners, could continue their journey by tram to Uttaradit’s SilaAat railway station, while Uttaradit railway officials told reporters that it should take 5-6 hours in changing new sleepers and Thailand's north-bound train full services have, in the meantime, be affected. In order to facilitate passengers travelling in three other trains heading for the Thai North, the SRT has asked the private-run Transport Co., Ltd. in Uttaradit to provide passenger buses to transport them to their destinations.
