Transport Ministry pushes for first aircraft industrial estate in Thailand

BANGKOK, March 21 (TNA) -- The Transport Ministry is pressing for a planned establishment of Thailand’s first aircraft industrial estate and aircraft maintenance centre, said Soithip Traisut, permanent secretary for Transport. Soithip told reporters that the ministry has assigned the Office of Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning to carry out a feasibility study on the matter since September last year. The study is expected to complete this September and by then the ministry would know a suitable location for the project, she said after chairing a seminar on the project’s market sounding. The aircraft industrial estate and aircraft maintenance centre project is part of the interim government’s policy declared before the National Legislative Assembly. According to Soithip, Thailand spends about 20 billion baht annually for aircrafts maintenance and the amount rises steadily due to growth in the aviation industry. About 200 aircrafts in Thailand need to undergo repair yearly and half of them are sent overseas for the purpose. Soithip said Thailand will have to spend a lot of money if it continues to rely on oversea countries to help maintain its aircrafts. (TNA)
