Trento conference highlights tolerance in Azerbaijan

Rome, March 20 (AzerTAc). The Italian city of Trento has hosted a conference titled “Autonomy and co-existence of nations. New frontiers of belief, language and civilization in Azerbaijan”. The conference was co-organized by the Azerbaijani Embassy in Rome, and Italian Vox Populi and Il Nodo di Gordio think-tanks. Moderator of the event, Daniele Lazzeri, chairman of Il Nodo di Gordio, described the conference as a good opportunity to discuss ethnic and religious tolerance and intercivilization dialogue in Azerbaijan. A letter of Diego Moltrer, president of the Regional Council of Trentino Alto Adige region, was read out at the conference. In his letter, Moltrer praised relations between the Italian and Azerbaijani regions. Samir Allahverdiyev, a staff member of the Azerbaijani Embassy, provided an insight into Azerbaijan`s history since the country regained its independence. He also highlighted Azerbaijan`s achievements, saying the country considerably improved its international image. Allahverdiyev said Azerbaijan was the UN Security Council`s non-permanent member in 2012-2013, adding the country maintains close cooperation with the world`s leading organizations. He said Azerbaijan attached a particular emphasis to its relationship with Italy. Allahverdiyev praised relations between the two countries, saying Italy was Azerbaijan`s number one trade partner. He spoke of the history and consequences of the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. Allahverdiyev also hailed tolerance in Azerbaijan, saying representatives of all nations and religions have enjoyed equal rights and lived together in an atmosphere of peace and friendship in the country. Other speakers included Riccardo Migliori, former president of the OSCE PA, Giulio Prigioni and Guido Lenzi, former Italian ambassadors, and Giuseppe Detomas, Trentino Alto Adige region`s Council for language minorities and peace. They highlighted Azerbaijan`s role on the international scene. The conference featured a panel meeting which focused on interfaith issues. The conference culminated with the presentation of “Historical roots of Albanian Apostolic Church, one of the symbols of Azerbaijan” book.
