Turkish Cypriots set for census

LEFKOSA (A.A) - November 30, 2011 - The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, or TRNC, is set to hold a population census on Sunday, the country's first since 2006, Nazim Cavusoglu, the Turkish Cypriot interior minister said. A general home curfew will be imposed on the day of the census, Cavusoglu said, adding, "this will be the last time the Turkish Cypriots would have to stay in. We will hold our next census on an address-based system."     Cavusoglu also noted that TRNC President Dervis Eroglu and Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias had agreed upon holding population census on the both sides of the island in their talks aimed at reunification.  The Turkish Cypriot minister noted the census did not aim at deporting foreign residents staying illegally in the country, saying the government would declare a general amnesty just within less than 24 hours.  Cavusoglu said a United Nations observer would monitor the census as well. Latest census in 2006 put population in the TRNC at 256,644.
