Turkmenistan prepares national climate change strategy

Turkmenistan, Ashgabat, March 27 / Trend, H. Hasanov / A large-scale document - National Strategy on Climate Change has been prepared in Turkmenistan, local media outlets reported on Tuesday. "We are ready to submit this strategy after its adoption to the appropriate UN agencies as a contribution to our common work," the Neutral Turkmenistan newspaper reported. Turkmenistan pays special attention to the efficient cooperation with Central Asian countries on the full spectrum of ecological problems in general and on climate change issues in particular. By decisions of the Central Asian Interstate Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD), adopted in June 2007 and November 2008, Turkmenistan has been assigned to coordinate the activities of the region states on climate change. "To this end, Turkmenistan proposes to establish a specialized agency - regional centre for addressing climate change problems in cooperation with the UN. It will be reasonable to open headquarters of such a center in Ashgabat. We a re ready to provide all necessary infrastructure for its operation," the "Vatan" newspaper reports.
