Twin-Otter Aircraft Crash Lands In Western Nepal, Passengers Safe

By Yuba Nath Lamsal KATHMANDU, June 2 (Bernama) -- A twin-otter aircraft with 18 passengers on board crash-landed in Pokhara, about 200km west of Kathmandu on Tuesday as the nose-wheel of the aircraft failed to open while landing, said officials. At the time, the 9N AKY aircraft belonging to Gorma Air, a new private airlines company of Nepal was enroute to Pokhara from the Himalayan district of Jomsom, close to the Tibet border, Pokhara airport manager Dipak Baral told Bernama in a telephone interview. "The 9N AKY aircraft which took off from Jomsom met with an accident at the runway while landing at the airport, but all passengers are safe," he said, adding that some passengers had sustained minor injuries. "Flights to and from the Pokhara Airport had been suspended as the crash-landed aircraft lay in the middle of the runway. "Efforts are underway to remove the aircraft from the runway and resume flights in Pokhara," he said. Pokhara police inspector Diban Raj said the aircraft was slightly damaged as it nose-dived while landing. Goma Air began operations in the Pokhara-Jomsom sector last year. The Pokhara Airport is the second busiest airport in Nepal. -- BERNAMA
