Two Soldiers Hurt In Shooting Incident At Malaysia-Thailand Border

KOTA BAHARU (Kelantan), July 16 (Bernama) -- Two soldiers were believed shot at by smugglers while patrolling at Pos Machang, Tanah Merah Tuesday at the Malaysia-Thailand border. Kelantan Police chief Mazlan Lazim said in the incident at 5.35 pm, two soldiers aged 29 and 26 years-old were shot at from 30 metres using a shotgun. "The 29-year-old soldier was hurt in both thighs while the 26-year-old soldier was hurt in the left thigh," he told a press conference at the Kelantan Police headquarters here, Wednesday. "We will seek the help of Thailand to investigate the case. We have identified the suspects responsible." The two soldiers hurt in the shooting were from the 5th Border Regiment. Mazlan advised residents to stay away from the border areas for the moment due to security reasons. "We are not scared of smugglers and will continue to patrol border areas to to prevent smuggling from becoming rampant," he said. The case is being investigated under Section 307 of Penal Code for attempted murder. Meanwhile, 8th Infantry Brigade Commander Brig-Gen Azmy Yahya said the incident did not discourage his men from patrolling the border to safeguard national security. "The act of cowards does not scare us but will make us stronger. A police report was made and we will investigate the incident," he said. The Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) is tasked with patrolling the 129 Km Malaysia-Thai border in Kelantan. -- BERNAMA
