BANGKOK, September 14 (TNA) - Two tourists have been rescued from the sea while more than 50 houses of fishermen in the southern province of Trang have been damaged after heavy rain devastated Thailand’s southern region on Saturday night. Officials said the two tourists were travelling by boat, which capsized near Tao Island in Surat Thani province. In nearby Trang province, high sea waves had damaged more than 50 homes in a local fishing village of Kantang district, forcing people, especially aged and children, to evacuate. Officials said water level in canals had increased and inundated more than 1,000 rai of farm land, while people who lived along the banks of Trang River and in more than 120 low lying villages were warned of possible forest runoff ad mudslide in the next few days. Meanwhile, a goods exhibition in the northeastern province of Bueng Karn had been affected by heavy downpours on Saturday night during the traditional long-tailed boat racing between Thailand, Laos and Vietnam in the Mekong River, which left one person injured. Amid rising concerns about the flood situation, Thailand’s Minister of Social Development and Human Security Police General Adul Saengsingkaew toured the flood-hit Sam Ngam district of the northern province of Phichit on Sunday, during which flood aid were given out to affected families.
