U.A.E. Water Aid Campaign collects Dh8.8 million via SMS and surpasses Dh100m

Abu Dhabi (WAM): The sum of donations collected by the U.A.E. Water Aid campaign via Du and Etisalat SMS service has reached Dh8.8 million through generous contributions from U.A.E.’s citizens and expats. The amount will provide clean drinking water to 352,000 people in the developing countries. The campaign still attracts massive attention from U.A.E.’s public and private sectors in addition to businessmen and individuals. Donations on the tenth day included Dh1 million from unknown benefactor, Dh1 million from Yousuf Ali on behalf of Emke Group, Dh 500,000 from Anjuman Najmi serving Dubai’s Alavi Bohra, Dh 300,000 from the Board of Directors of Jafaria Awqaf, Dh 250,000 from Ziad Al Ghazali, Dh 250,000 from Dubai Courts, Dh 52,000 from Fakhry Centre and Dh1 million from Dubai Health Authority. The Water Aid Campaign was launched by Vice President and Prime Minister of the U.A.E. and Ruler of Dubai His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum on the first day of the holy month of Ramadan to provide access to fresh drinking water for 5 million people around the world who suffer from shortage of potable water. The World Health Organisation (WHO) figures show that a child dies every 21 seconds from a water-related illness and 9,863 people die every day from thirst and water related diseases. The total donations and contributions for the initiative has achieved 83% of its objectives as the campaign has successfully collected Dh103,252 million which will help providing clean drinking water for 4,130 million people in the developing countries. The Campaign will dig wells, install pumps and provide water purification equipment. The U.A.E. people’s immediate response to the U.A.E. Water Aid campaign underlines the noble values of the people of country. Media have valued U.A.E. role as capital of humanitarian initiatives, highly commending the role His Highness Sheikh Mohammed in the various areas of charitable and humanitarian work. The campaign comes in the light of the aggravation of water scarcity issue in many parts of the world over the past decades. This scarcity has resulted in threatening the life of millions of people, heralding grave dangers if world countries and international bodies do not initiate prompt plans and strategies so as to bring forward radical solutions for this issue in afflicted areas. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
