Udon Thani to carry out big cleaning after storm

UDON THANI, May 19 (TNA) -- Thailand northeastern province of Udon Thani is set to carry out a Big Cleaning Day between May 19-24, aiming to restore the city back to its original state after the province was hit hard by the recent storms, with damages predicted to be over 100 million baht. Deputy Mayor of Udon Thani Kittikorn Theekathananon said the storms, which landed in the province on May 6 and 12 had wreaked havoc in many areas, particularly on houses, where 1,117 families have already asked for assistance. He said damages also include ruins in the business sector and on governmental buildings, where trees were also felled on top of buildings and houses. The deputy mayor mentioned that for the past two weeks, authorities have been mobilised to continuously cleaned up the debris and has set May 19-24 as Big Cleaning Day, in order for a thorough cleaning to be carried out in the city to restore it back to normal. He said during this period, any person who wishes the official to help trim down any tree branches around their properties could call in to 199 or 042-244877 or post pictures on the Facebook page of Udon Thani City Municipality. Head of Udon Thani Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office Sorawut Palwat, on the other hand, said the province has seen severe downpours this year, especially in the heart of the city, prompting the governor to order for all concerned agencies to thoroughly inspect for damages, so as to find out the extend of the damage. Mr Sorawut pointed out that losses are still being tallied but said he is expecting damages to be higher than 100 million baht. (TNA)
