UN envoy hails Iran’s role in bringing peace to region

Baghdad, March 26, IRNA - Special representative of the United Nations (UN) Secretary-General for Iraq appreciated the important role Iran plays in combating terrorism to establish security and peace in both Iraq and the region. Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert expressed her appreciation in a meeting held in the Iraqi capital with Iran’s Ambassador to Baghdad Iraj Masjedi prior to her upcoming visit to Tehran to hold talks with the Iranian officials on the UN activities in Iraq. In the meeting, she also hailed the undeniable role Iraq’s Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Units) plays in defeating terrorism and bringing stability to Iraq. For his part, the Iranian ambassador elaborated on Iran’s activities in countering terrorism in the region, in Iraq and Syria in particular. Masjedi said Iran’s counter-terrorism advisory role in Iraq and Syria have been played by the request of the two countries. Iran is after solidarity and friendship between the regional people and governments, said he, adding the country’s efforts have always been in line with ensuring stability in the region. The ambassador repeated once again Islamic Republic of Iran’s readiness to help construct Iraq despite Washington’s unfair unilateral anti-Tehran sanctions. Islamic Republic spares no effort to deepen friendly relations with its neighbor, he concluded. Despite world criticism over Washington’s anti-Iran measures, US President Donald Trump re-imposed anti-Iran sanctions on November 5, 2018. Follow us on Twitter @IrnaEnglish
