UN praises Thailand for concrete actions against human trafficking

BANGKOK, January 16 (TNA) - The United Nations has praised the Thai government for its determination and concrete actions to the solution to illegal migrant workers and human trafficking. New Thai Labour Minister Police General Adul Saengsingkaew told journalists that United Nations Resident Coordinator (UNRC) Deirdre Boyd, who is also a representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), expressed the appreciation to the Thai government during a meeting with him at his ministry in Bangkok on January 15. Police General Adul acknowledged the visiting UNRC also said that the UN is ready to provide technical support and counsels for the Thai government during its ongoing amendment to a complicated decree on the management of immigrant workers. According to the minister, the Thai government, through his ministry, has implemented policies and measures on solving the problems of labour shortages and illegal migrant workers, as well as human trafficking and related issues through negotiations with the governments of home countries of migrant workers on observing and sustaining memoranda of understanding (MOUs) with the Thai side on migrant workers. Besides, the Thai government has revised official processes on legal imports of migrant workers to be more practical with reduced red-taped steps and a solution to illegal employment brokers. The minister stressed that the Thai government has paid attention to taking good care of underprivileged people, both Thais and foreign nationals, equally through integrated actions among concerned parties in the public and private sectors, as well as international organizations.
