UNESCO Calls For Expansion Of Technical, Engineering Ties With Iran

Tehran, May 18, IRNA - A senior official from UNESCO has called for expansion of cooperation with Iran in the fields of scientific, technological, educational and cultural activities. Assistant Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) for Natural Sciences Gretchen Kalonji made the call here in a recent meeting with Iranˈs Minister of Science, Research and Technology Kamran Daneshjou. She is currently in Iran to discuss issues of mutual interests with Iranian officials. She stressed that UNESCO was particularly interested in expansion of bilateral cooperation with Iran in the fields of technical and engineering sciences. Referring to Tehranˈs remarkable scientific achievements, Kalonji said she was surprised by the countryˈs progress in that field. Noting that Iran-UNESCO ties were in proper level, the official said, out of 26 UNESCOˈs active centers across the world, three were located in Iran. Referring to the UNSCO and Iran joint stance on fostering scientific, educational and cultural activities, Kalonji voiced UNESCO full readiness to cooperate with Iranˈs Ministry of Science, Research and Technology for expansion of global networks of the Islamic science both in Iran and in the Asia- Pacific region. Meanwhile, the Iranian minister referred to UNESCO international status and stressed that the body could play a pivotal role in the spread of justice and peace as well as cultural exchanges worldwide./end
