UNHCR believes in Thailand’s attempts to solve human rights problems

SWITZERLAND, March 1 – The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) considers Thailand as reliable in attempts to solve human rights problems in the region, Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai said. Mr Don was attending a session of the United Nations Human Rights Council. After meeting UNHCR Filippo Grandi, Mr Don said Mr Grandi was a friend of Thailand and was aware of Thailand’s longstanding and great support for refugees in the region. The minister said they discussed extensively situations in the Rakhine State of Myanmar and necessity to immediately solve problems there as it was evident that more than 700,000 people were affected. The UNHCR will organise a meeting on the issue to discuss sustainable and effective solutions on the matter. The UNHCR expected cooperation from countries, especially from Thailand for its status as Myanmar’s neighbouring country and for their close ties at various levels, Mr Don said. “The reliability of Thailand is recognised by the UNHCR and we have the positive intention to see solutions in the region and in neighbouring countries,” Mr Don said.
