UNICEF seeks donations from Thai people to help children in South Sudan

BANGKOK, March 23 (TNA) - The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) plans to mobilise financial support from people in Thailand to assist children with malnutrition in South Sudan. UNICEF announced the move on Monday, saying that a new round of fighting has erupted in South Sudan since December 2013, causing tens of thousands of children to have evacuated from their homes and communities in panic with suffering and lack of food and water. UNICEF has estimated that there are about 235,000 children, aged lower than five years, suffering from acute malnutrition in South Sudan now, 50,000 of whom could die if urgent assistance was not reached them timely. Nichkhun Horawetchakun, a young Thai male artist who is selected as the Friend of UNICEF and the presenter of a UNICEF campaign, said in a one-minute advertisement spot that donations by people in Thailand at 100 baht each, through the short message service (SMS) of their mobile phones or an online service, can assist a child in South Sudan to survive for two more days. The campaign in Thailand is part of UNICEF's global fund mobilising programme, under which financial donations of a total of about 225 million US dollars are sought to provide humanitarian support for troubled children and women in South Sudan. UNICEF has mobilised only 14 per cent of its targeted fund raising for the purpose so far. (TNA)
