Unusual Bulge Sees 2 Young M'sians Ride Into Long Arm Of S'porean Law

By Tengku Noor Shamsiah Tengku Abdullah SINGAPORE, June 25 (Bernama) -- An unusual bulge in their clothes saw two young Malaysians riding into the long arm of the Singaporean law at the Woodlands Checkpoint. The 20-year-old suspects were found with four blocks of substances, believed to be cannabis (ganja) concealed under their clothes in the groin and back areas. Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) officers detained the Malaysians and their Malaysian-registered motorcycle in the incident at 6.45pm on Tuesday. In a joint statement Wednesday, the ICA and Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) said a checkpoint officer observed an unusual bulge under the duo's clothes before examining their outfit. It said a total of four blocks of substances, suspected to be cannabis, were found strapped to their back and groin areas. CNB officers were alerted of the detection. According to the statement, the suspects and the blocks of cannabis were handed over to CNB to facilitate investigations. The seized blocks were found to contain about 1.9kg of cannabis, worth an estimated street value of about S$62,000 (US$46,092). Under the Misuse of Drugs Act, those convicted of importing more than 500 grammes of cannabis may face the death penalty. About 1.9kg of cannabis is sufficient to sustain the drug habit of about 270 cannabis abusers for a week. -- BERNAMA
