US Embassy: What Was Quoted For Ambassador Jones On Granting Immunity To Advisers Inaccurate

BAGHDAD / NINA / The US embassy in Baghdad said what was reported by some media for granting Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi immunity for US advisers in Iraq, is not accurate. The embassy said in a press statement: "Some of the media picked up inaccurate statements for the US ambassador to Iraq, Stuart Jones that the Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi has provided assurances on the immunity and privileges granted to the Americans trainers and advisers currently in Iraq." The statement added: "This information is not accurate, and what the Ambassador Jones said is that the US government has guarantees according to official written messages between the United States and Iraq under the strategic framework agreement, adding that relevant diplomatic notes have been exchanged in June 2014". It is mentioned that "Associated Press" quoted the US ambassador to Iraq, Stuart Jones, as saying that "the Iraqi prime minister Haider al-Abadi gave assurances that US forces will get immunity from prosecution," pointing out that "these forces will have a different role." Jones added, according to (AP) "We have assurances from the Iraqi government on the privileges and immunities that we need to". / end
